7.5 Technical Records

The laboratory shall maintain technical records that document laboratory activities, results, and sufficient information to ensure traceability, facilitate identification of factors affecting measurement results, and allow for repetition of the activity under conditions as close as possible to the original.

7.5.1 Content and Maintenance of Technical Records

The laboratory shall ensure that technical records for each laboratory activity contain:

  • Results and reports.
  • Sufficient information to facilitate the identification of factors affecting the measurement result and its associated measurement uncertainty.
  • Details enabling the repetition of the laboratory activity under conditions as close as possible to the original.

The technical records shall include:

  • The date of each laboratory activity.
  • The identity of personnel responsible for:
    • Performing the laboratory activity.
    • Checking data and results.
  • Original observations, data, and calculations, which shall be recorded at the time they are made.
  • Records that are identifiable with the specific task.

7.5.2 Tracking and Amending Technical Records

The laboratory shall ensure that amendments to technical records can be tracked to previous versions or to original observations.

The following shall be retained:

  • Both the original and amended data and files.
  • The date of alteration.
  • An indication of the altered aspects.
  • The identity of the personnel responsible for the alterations.
